Scientists recently discovered five new species of arboreal snakes that feed on snails during research in Colombia, Ecuador, and Panama.
These species, which had gone unnoticed until now, are known for their vibrant eye colors and distinct scale patterns. Among them is the “Sibon irmelindicaprioae“, named in honor of the mother of actor Leonardo DiCaprio, a docile snake with bright orange eyes and colorful stripes.
Other notable species include the “Sibon canopy,” with intense red eyes, and the “Sibon marleyae,” which has a multicolored pattern and burnt orange eyes.
Additionally, researchers identified the “Sibon vieirai,” which is more active at night and on rainy days, and the “Dipsas welborni,” which, when threatened, tries to appear larger and emits an unpleasant odor.

All of the snakes are harmless and primarily defend themselves through strong odors. These discoveries are significant for biodiversity, especially since the snakes inhabit forest areas that are being destroyed by both legal and illegal mining.
Scientists warn that mining, especially open-pit mining, is putting these new species and their habitats at risk. Biologist Alejandro Arteaga emphasizes that these discoveries are just the beginning, and the rapid pace of environmental destruction could hinder future research and discoveries in this rich region of South America.
